History
The Latin American Federation of Associations of Social Communication Schools is an international non-governmental organization which groups 13 different National Associations and more than 240 Communication Faculties and/or Schools in 21 Latin American countries. It was created in October, 1981. FELAFACS is an International Organism recognized by UNESCO. It accomplished this statute in the General Assembly of this well Known World Wide Organism in 1987.
FELAFACS is member of JOURNET, a network of journalism and media schools associated with the UNESCO's objectives and ideals, in conformity with its mandate and pursuant to Resolution 27C/365 presented by France at its 27th General Conference.
For several years, FELAFACS has received support from UNESCO for different projects, and specially from the IPDC in order to establish its web page.
Its permanent headquarters (the General Secretariat) are in Lima, Peru, where it also is recognized by the Peruvian State, as an Organism of International Technical Cooperation.
FELAFACS represents Communication Schools and Faculties of Public (State and Federal) and Private (Laic and Confessionals) Universities. One of FELAFACS main principles is to make no distinction between Universities based on their economic, political or religious characteristics thus there is a high number of Faculties affiliated.
Although the main axis of FELAFACS is teaching Communications, it does assume diverse lines of action and initiatives which contribute to improve communications, in a perspective of integral development for Latin America.
Structure
FELAFACS is structured in the following way: General Assembly, Consulting Office, one President, an Executive Secretary and five Directors in Brasil, México, Andean Countries, South Cone, and Central America and the Caribbean. The National Associations and the Associated Faculties from non associated countries, depend on the Presidency.
Mission
Contribute to the development of education and professional practice of communications in diverse areas in Latin America.
Goals
- Contribute to the instruction of teachers and the exchange of experiences which permit an integral reformulation of the teaching-learning process in the faculties of Social Communication in Latin America.
- Encourage interchanging experiences, an evaluation of the contents of teachings and work methodology in relation to the formation of journalists from the faculties of Social Communications in Latin America.
- Favor the exchange of experiences, as well as elaborating achievement and necessity diagnoses to formulate a plan which unites the university radio stations of Latin America.
- Evaluate the changes made by television instruction five years after Latin America workshops for television teachers have been established.
- Strengthen the bonding process between the national associations that conform FELAFACS.
- Impel cooperative actions and meetings between teaching associations, communication faculties, teachers and researchers from diverse regions of the world.
- Establish action with other international organizations that develop Communications programs in Latin America.
Lines of Action
- International Seminars relating to he development of communication and the teaching processes.
- Meetings to formulate diagnoses, strategy designs and action plans in relation to teaching, research and communication.
- National Seminars to take place in each affiliated country.
- Support and promote research that may contribute to a better understanding and practice of communication.
- Encourage exchange programs and scholarships for specialized studies for teachers from the communication faculties.
- Publishing journals and books by FELAFACS.
- Promote university production through Latin American and national festivals and presentations.
Associations
The Federation associates National Associations in the following countries:
Argentina, Bolivia, Brasil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, México, Paraguay, Perú, Puerto Rico, República Dominicana and Venezuela.
Affiliates
Besides de National Associations, FELAFACS affiliates Schools and Faculties from: Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panamá and Uruguay.
As Honorary Members, there are a good number of Faculties and Schools
from: Canada, Spain and The United States, as well as several non-governmental organizations from the region.
